Need spray foam equipment or guidance? We can help you there too. Everything from best practice training to setting up your own spray foam truck or trailer — give us a call!

FAQs – Spray Foam Insulation

Spray foam insulation is a two-part material that is sprayed as a liquid and quickly expands into a solid foam. As it cures, it fills gaps, cracks, and hard-to-reach spaces while creating both insulation and an air seal. That combination is what makes spray foam one of the highest-performing insulation options available.

Spray foam is commonly used in walls, attics, crawl spaces, rim joists, metal buildings, and pole barns. It is a great choice where air leaks are a concern or where framing and penetrations make it difficult for traditional insulation to fit properly.

Open-cell spray foam is lighter, softer, and expands more, making it a great choice for interior walls, attics, and sound reduction. Closed-cell spray foam is denser, has a higher R-value per inch, and adds moisture resistance and structural strength. Aside from their properties, climate can greatly impact whether you should consider open or closed-cell spray foam. If you’re not sure which product is right for your project, give us a call. We’ll help you choose the best option.

Closed-cell spray foam typically provides an R-value of about R-6 to R-8 per inch, while open-cell spray foam is generally around R-3.5 to R-5 per inch. Because spray foam also seals air leaks, its real-world performance often exceeds what R-value alone suggests.

Each insulation type has its strengths. Spray foam provides outstanding air sealing and excellent thermal performance. In many applications, it delivers the best overall results. Batt insulation and blown-in insulation are often more economical for insulating large open areas. Many buildings actually benefit from using more than one insulation type. If you’re comparing options, we’re happy to help.

Yes. One of spray foam’s biggest advantages is that it expands to seal cracks, gaps, and penetrations where air can move through a building. This helps improve comfort, reduce energy costs, and make heating and cooling systems work more efficiently.

Closed-cell spray foam is highly resistant to moisture and can help limit water intrusion in many applications. Open-cell foam is more vapor permeable and is typically chosen where drying ability is important. Choosing the right product depends on where it will be installed, so feel free to ask if you need guidance.

Small projects can often be completed with disposable spray foam kits, but insulating an entire home or building requires professional spray equipment and training. Proper temperature, mixing, spray technique, and safety all play a big role in achieving good results. We carry professional spray foam products and equipment for contractors and can help you select the right materials for the job. If you are not an insulation or spray foam contractor, we know lots of good ones and can recommend a professional or two in your area.

When installed correctly, spray foam insulation can last for the life of the building. It does not settle or sag like some other insulation materials, allowing it to maintain its performance for decades.

Yes. Open-cell spray foam is especially good at reducing sound transmission between rooms and floors. While it is not a true soundproofing product, it can make homes and buildings noticeably quieter.

Spray foam typically costs more upfront than other insulation types, but it also provides insulation and air sealing in a single product. Many homeowners and builders find the improved comfort, lower energy bills, and long-term performance make it a worthwhile investment. If budget is the biggest concern, batt insulation or blown-in insulation may be a better fit for some areas.

Spray foam performs especially well in areas where stopping air movement is important, such as rim joists, roof decks, crawl spaces, and walls with lots of wiring or plumbing. It is also a popular choice for metal buildings and pole barns because it conforms to irregular surfaces and helps reduce condensation.

The biggest advantage is that it insulates and air seals at the same time. By filling gaps that other insulation leaves behind, spray foam helps create a more comfortable, energy-efficient building with fewer drafts and more consistent indoor temperatures.
